Playing Grown-Ups

I made a startling realization this weekend.

Let me set the scene...

So, it was a friend's birthday. He turned 29. To celebrate, we went to a fancy(ish) steakhouse at the old port (aptly called Vieux-Port Steakhouse). We're all nicely dress: you know, wearing our "adult" clothes as opposed to what we usually wear to hang out (jeans and t-shirts). One of the other guests had Googled some of the wines on the wine list to figure out which one to order. The conversation revolved around work, promotions, one guy's new condo..

And I thought, you know, we're all so grown up! We all live (relatively) alone, we all pay (various amounts of) rent, we have bills to pay, we commute, one guy actually irons, like, everything... Wow, we're adults. When did that happen?

The wine is brought over and the waitress asks the guy (who irons) if he'll be the one tasting it. He says yes and for some reason, I find that hilarious.

We're not adults. We're playing at being adults. Or, at least, I'm playing at being an adult. And I think my closest friend there might be pretending too. So, at least I'm not alone.

But I don't think any of us really sees ourselves as grown ups... as responsible, mature adults.

Now it just so happens that my last blog was about How I Met Your Mother because that's what my mom compared us to. On HIMYM, they're all 30-somethings, married with children or looking for "the one". But they still have incredibly immature and childish moments. Yet another reason why I love that show so much. BECAUSE IT'S ACTUALLY KINDA REALISTIC!!!!! Well, maybe not their actual stories, but the way things happen. And, on some level, how the main group interacts with one another.

So, when does one grow up? When does one officially become an adult? Not when you start paying bills... not when you go on vacation alone... not when you graduate university, start work, have a career... so, when?
